Instead of Verifiers contacting you to confirm employment or income, they are now able to go through The Work Number.
This service fulfills these requests by securely transmitting your payroll information for instant verifications.
Equifax is an industry-leading commercial source of consolidated employment information, with over *3,100,000 businesses of all sizes contributing to it, including small businesses like yours.
Over *48,000 organizations with credentialed Verifiers trust the service for its automated and direct payroll information.

What Should I Do When I Get a Request for Employment and Income Information From a Lender or Government Agency?
If you receive a call or an email from a bank, other lender or creditor that is processing a loan or credit for your employees or from a government agency confirming income to provide aid to your employees, you should direct them to www.theworknumber.com/verifiers.
Many Verifiers utilize The Work Number today, and they often check the database before contacting the employer. They may call you first, however, because they are not aware that your company is now a part of the service. If the Verifier has not used the service before, they can access instructions at www.theworknumber.com and click on Get Started.
What Are the Benefits for My Employees?
Employees benefit because Verifiers, including lenders and government agencies, are able to make faster decisions with automated employment information which can improve their opportunities.
Additionally, outsourcing the confirmation of employment and income to The Work Number provides privacy to employees by removing the employer from personal transactions.
Employees provide consent for organizations to obtain their information for a loan, credit, or benefit, so they are typically involved from the start.
Do Employees Consent to Their Information Being Provided to Verifiers?
Verifiers typically obtain consent from employees to receive their employment and income information during the application process for a loan, lease, credit, or government benefit. If a Verifier requests an employee’s income information, the Verifier is required to certify to The Work Number that they have the employee’s consent specific to its request for income information.
Who can get information from The Work Number?
Information from The Work Number is deemed a consumer report under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Therefore, Verifiers must have a permissible purpose to obtain the information.
Each Verifier is vetted and approved to access the data on The Work Number for a FCRA-permissible purpose only. A permissible purpose may exist where Verifiers are evaluating applications for credit, making eligibility for government benefit determinations, making employment purpose determinations, and more. For income information requests, Verifiers must additionally certify they have the employee’s consent.
Who Is Considered a Verifier?
Organizations that have a permissible purpose to confirm employment and income information about a consumer under the FCRA, are considered Verifiers.
What Information Does a Lender or Other Verifier Get From The Work Number?
The Work Number can provide different types of verifications for different purposes. For example, a hiring employer might want to verify past employment of a consumer seeking the new job, while a mortgage lender will typically need to verify employment and income in detail to approve a loan. Social service agencies will also need a verification of income to grant public aid to a consumer.
How Does the Service Provide Security in Responding to Employment and Income Requests?
The Work Number leverages multiple layers of protection – Verifier credentialing, multi-factor authentication, inspections, and auditing of data use. Protecting the data entrusted to The Work Number is a top priority.
In addition to being a secure database, The Work Number helps eliminate your potential risk of responding to a fraudulent request or providing more information to a lender or government agency than is permissible.
How Is the Service Provided by Paychex and Equifax at No Cost to Employers? Who Pays for It?
Paychex and Equifax do not charge your company or your employees for The Work Number. Verifiers (lenders and government agencies) pay for the verifications because they can access direct payroll information that they need to make decisions relating to credit, government benefits, employment purposes and more – 24/7. Verifiers pay for the speed and convenience that The Work Number offers over traditional methods of manually reaching out to employers.
